“It’s all social media”: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his say on the importance of assists

Pogba enjoys fine start to the season

Paul Pogba has begun the season a man reborn. After Euro2020 disappointment, he returned to Manchester to see that his side had added 3 stars in the form of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, and has in turn upped his performance levels to match.

This has been borne out in the stats too, with the Frenchman having provided an immense seven assists in four games for the Red Devils, including four in the opening game of the season. For comparison, this is already two more than he managed in the whole of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign, and he seems to be thriving with his new teammates.

In turn, this has led to reports that he is set to complete a U-turn and extend his contract (which expires this summer) at Manchester United, whereas before he was widely expected to depart for free in 2022.

Speaking last night, Paul Pogba’s brother revealed:

It’s his decision – he’s feeling very good at Man United now, this season… then let’s see

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays down the numbers

One man who won’t be won over by Paul Pogba’s impressive assist record this season, at least no publicly, is Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Speaking ahead of their trip to take on Young Boys in the Champions League, the United boss played down the importance of assists.

When asked about the impressive record, the Norweigian asked:

‘What does an assist consist of? A square pass and Bruno hits the top corner or when Paul plays a great pass through and Mason runs past? Paul’s always been a top passer, one of the best in European football… I don’t count assists, it’s all social media.’

Clearly then, while Pogba leads the way for his side, he is not getting carried away with the numbers.

Do you agree with the United boss?
