‘It could turn a little bit sour’: Gary Neville claim highlights key Arsenal issue

Neville’s Aubameyang comments

Arsenal would lose to a struggling Rafa Benitez side on Monday evening, with Everton coming from 1-0 down to earn a 2-1 win.

One of the bigger issues for Arsenal on the day was a lack of proper chances.

Alexandre Lacazette cut a frustrated figure up top for much of the 90 minutes, whilst Arsenal’s captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, did not even get on the pitch till the 85th minute.

Aubameyang was once one of the most deadly strikers in the Premier League, but his form dipped off massively since he signed his latest Arsenal contract.

Now, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has moved to question Aubameyang and Mikel Arteta’s relationship.

Arteta is not the first man to do so of late, with Thierry Henry also recently suggesting there was something not right between the pair.

But when speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville suggested that there is a problem brewing and that the situation could turn a little bit sour:

“I think there will be a problem with Aubameyang off the back of this game. I don’t think he will like the idea of Nketiah coming on, I don’t think he will like the idea of being snubbed, full stop.

“It’s one of them that is hard to play as a side foot across into the far corner. You almost want it with your left foot, to guide it and bend it past Pickford into the far corner.

“It’s a little bit awkward and unnatural with how he’s tried to finish it. Not for me to tell him how to finish.

“Yeah, it is going to (a problem is brewing there), isn’t it? There’s always a bit of a bug there between Arteta and Aubameyang. I know he’s the captain, but he leaves him out.

“I think it’s a little bit awkward. I suspect if they could get money for him and get someone else and I suspect if Aubameyang could go somewhere else and move on, then he probably would as well. It could turn a little bit sour.”

Arsenal’s biggest issue

Neville’s comments, though, highlight perhaps Arsenal’s biggest issue at present.

And that is their inability to score enough goals and their current striker’s poor form. The north Londoners have so far scored 18 in 15 PL ties this term.

In comparison, Manchester City have scored 32, Liverpool 44 and Chelsea 35. So, it is quite obvious that if Arsenal really wish to become a top-four side once again, they need to start finding the net on a more frequent basis.

But when your captain and previous top-scorer is only coming on for the final seven or so minutes of a game and your other senior striking pair are out of contract in the summer, it is not too surprising to see Arsenal struggling in front of goal, with it fairly obvious that something has to change up top.
