Chelsea have given up on trying to qualify for the Champions League according to Stan Collymore, who thinks that Antonio Conte will be sacked come the end of the season, and that the Blues will have a huge clearout come the summer.
That’s his view, who thinks that the club’s players are nowhere near good enough or tough enough mentally, and that the new manager will have a huge job on his hands, especially given how poor some of the players have been – and their main issue is failing to be consistent and failing to build on a season of winning the title.
In his column for The People, Collymore said: “Whoever takes over from Antonio Conte at Chelsea in the summer has a massive job on his hands.
“Because if I were going in as the Blues’ new boss there’d only be two players I’d confidently hang my hat on.
“You know what you are going to get from N’Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta but the rest of them, I’m not so sure.
“Maybe Thibaut Courtois, because of the fact he showed some backbone in going to Atletico Madrid on loan for three years, would be included as well.
“But the others? Their wild inconsistency of the last few years tells you all that you need to know.
“For a team of that talent to be champions, 10th, champions and then whatever they finish this season is embarrassing – and I’m convinced they’ve given up on trying for Champions League qualification this season already.”
Conte looks set to leave the club come the end of the season – but one player who’s future is in doubt is Eden Hazard, who has criticised the manager on occasion this season – and has been heavily linked with Real Madrid.
However, for the first time, people are beginning to question Hazard and his potential, noting that the likes of Mo Salah and Dele Alli are achieving better numbers than he is – and that Hazard is still going missing in games.
Quite who Chelsea will end up with come next season remains to be seen, especially given they’ve now all but missed out on the Champions League.
