As per a report from reliable BBC journalist Simon Stone this afternoon, Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial looks set to remain at the club for the coming season.
Martial, a 22-year-old French international attacker, made the move to Old Trafford from Monaco in the summer of 2015 for a fee with the potential to rise to £58 million, following a breakout campaign at the Stade Louis.
After an excellent debut campaign in English football, during which he found the net on 11 occasions in the Premier League, Martial struggled to maintain his form during the 2016/17 season, notching just 4 times in the league.
He did enjoy a more prolific campaign this time around, having racked up 9 goals and 5 assists in the Premier League in 2017/18, but the 18-time capped Les Bleus’ international nevertheless managed starts in just 18 of United’s 38 league outings.
‘Wants to leave’
Martial’s lack of a guaranteed starting place under Jose Mourinho, coupled with Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at the club in January, has led to mounting rumours since the turn of the year that the Lyon youth product could be on the move this summer.
As such, when Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, confirmed in an interview with RMC Sport back in June that the Frenchman had set his sights on a departure from Old Trafford, it didn’t come as a massive surprise:
‘Anthony is sad about his situation at Manchester. He loves the club and the fans, he showed it for 3 years.’
‘I can tell you that without the unconditional support of the fans, Anthony would have already asked to leave United.’
‘He was elected three times players of the month by the fans. Then arrived the transfer window of January. I will not comment on the consequences of this transfer window.’
‘After thinking about all the possibilities and parameters, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United.’
‘When you don’t find an agreement with the biggest club in the world about a new contract, it’s probably the club don’t want it.’
‘Not actively looking to sell’
The aftermath of Lamboley’s revelation has since led to widespread speculation regarding where exactly Martial could end up this summer, with all of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Juventus rumoured to hold an interest in the gifted attacker’s services.
Chelsea and Bayern have been the two clubs most-persistently touted as potential destinations of late, with reports in the English media over recent weeks having suggested that new Blues’ boss Maurizio Sarri is keen on the Frenchman’s signature.
But, as per the aforementioned report from Simon Stone this afternoon, Manchester United themselves still in fact have no intention of seeing Martial depart Old Trafford before this Thursday’s transfer deadline, with it now ‘increasingly likely’ that the former Monaco man will stay put:
In addition, it is looking increasingly likely Anthony Martial will remain @ManUtd beyond Thursday. Club not actively looking to sell at this stage.
