Dortmund vs Man City
Manchester City will be back in European action on Wednesday evening.
The Sky Blues are set to face off with Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion, in the second of two Champions League quarter-final ties.
City dominated BVB for large stretches of the first leg, but Pep Guardiolaâs side were still only able to come away with a 2-1 win after Marco Reus secured a crucial away goal in the 84th minute.
As a result, whilst the Citizens remain favourites ahead of Wednesdayâs game, a semi-final berth remains very much up for grabs.
Gundogan names Man Cityâs main issue in Champions League
This is of course made all the more relevant when taking into account Man Cityâs poor record in the Champions League’s quarter-finals.
The Premier League giants havenât made it past the last-eight since 2016, and have endured some rather embarrassing exits from the competition in recent years, versus the likes of Lyon and Tottenham.
In turn, speaking ahead of Dortmund, Ilkay Gundogan has highlighted what he believes has been City’s main issue in the Champions League over recent seasons.
And that, according to the German, has been individual mistakes:
“For me it’s important to take the next step, not just the experiences we had in the last few years, but also I have expectations of myself and teammates and I know we have a great team and are capable of going into the semi-finals,”Â
“We should have been there earlier in the last few seasons but we were lacking something, individual mistakes which led to goals – and it’s tough.”
“Especially when you concede these goals at home it’s not easy running behind that.â
However, Gundogan also added that City are now a much more stable outfit, especially at the back:
I feel we are much more stable at the moment this season, especially defensively, the more you proceed in this competition the more important it gets.
“It gives you a safe feeling when you know your defence and goalkeeper are working very well. Combined with the feeling we know we’re always able to score it’s a great potential.”
