‘I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him’ Kai Havertz’s former coach reacts to Chelsea star’s form

Bayer Leverkusen and Kai Havertz’s former coach Peter Bosz has said he ‘cannot see’ the idea that Chelsea and Lampard have for the German.

Havertz’s place

Kai Havertz has struggled since arriving at Chelsea and into the Premier League. He arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a deal worth more than £70 million.

Making his name in the Bundesliga as a goalscoring midfielder, he has not yet been able to replicate the same prolific form which earned him such a significant fee. He has been used in multiple positions including wide right and also in behind the striker, be that fellow newcomer Timo Werner or Tammy Abraham.

The Athletic spoke to Bayer Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz. The Dutch coach felt he has yet to work out what Chelsea manager Frank Lampard wants from the German International.

“As for Kai, I can see why Chelsea brought him in but I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him. It’s really good that he protects him in the press, though. But in the end, you must deliver, you must score goals and make goals. For a €100 million transfer you must play, and he isn’t,” he said.

“Kai plays the piano, but Hakim is from the streets,” Bosz said regarding Chelsea’s other attacking midfield signing Hakim Ziyech. “If there’s a free kick, he will just walk up and take it. He’s like that.”

With Werner, Havertz, Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, Chelsea and Frank Lampard were thought to have a title-challenging season, however, that has not materialized and instead they sit just three points above previously touted relegation battlers Arsenal having lost to the Gunners 3-1.

Why Van de Beek?

It was not only his former Bayer Leverkusen players that Bosz was commenting on. He also spoke of those from his time as boss of Dutch side Ajax. Manchester United decided to spend a significant fee on Donny van de Beek but the Netherlands international has yet to have an impact at Old Trafford due to a lack of opportunities.

Bosz has questioned the signing considering the presence of Portuguese talisman Bruno Fernandes.

“It’s difficult for me to say because I’ve never worked there,” Bosz said. “Some players take more time than others, in all leagues. But I do question why Manchester United brought Donny in. They already have the best player in the league in that position: Bruno Fernandes.”

“There is no space in their midfield for another No 10. Donny can play as a No 6, but it must be a compact pitch. If it becomes a big pitch, it’s not his game.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken of his frustration at being asked about the 23-year old, maintaining the club have reiterated their faith in the midfielder.

“I’ve answered this question so many times,” manager Solskjaer said. “There’s so many examples of players needing a little bit of time, quality players.

“We have many examples ourselves and there are other clubs with examples. Sometimes it takes time. You don’t expect people who care for him to be quiet at times, especially when they want the best for them.

“Donny is going to play tomorrow. That’s another chance for him and, yes, I’ve spoken to him and reiterated and made him aware of how much we rate him. But he’ll play tomorrow and that’s a good chance again to kick on.”
