Hungary vs Wales: Match preview

Hungary are currently top of Group E.

That’s despite the fact they got off to a disastrous start.

On matchday one, they lost 2-0 at Anton Malatinský Stadium to Slovakia.

However, they bounced back, causing a huge shock.

They came from a goal down to beat World Cup finalists Croatia 2-1 in Budapest.

Ádám Szalai and Máté Pátkai the scorers.

Then, on Saturday afternoon, they travelled to Baku to face Azerbaijan at Baku Olympic Stadium.

A brace from Willi Orban as well as a goal on debut for Dávid Holman saw them win 3-1.

That leaves them top, above Croatia on head to head.

Can they make it three competitive wins in a row for the first time since September 2011?

Chris Mepham

Will Wales return to winning ways?

As for Wales, they are in desperate need of a win here.

They kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 home win over Slovakia in March.

Dan James’ first international goal settling that one.

On Saturday they faced, what will surely be, their toughest game of this campaign.

They were in Osijek to face Croatia.

The Dragons fell behind early on when James Lawrence diverted a shot into his own net.

Then, just after the break, Ivan Perišić smashed home the host’s second.

Late on David Brooks’ deflected shot gave Wales hope.

But, they could not find an equaliser and left defeated.

As it stand in Group E:

Hungary and Croatia have six points.

Wales and Slovakia have three.

Azerbaijan have none.

However, the top two have played a game more than anybody else so can Wales take a big step towards qualification with a win here?

After a good win in Baku on Saturday, Marco Rossi is likely to make just one change to his side.

RB Leipzig’s Péter Gulácsi will win his 27th cap in goal.

Willi Orban, who scored a brace at the weekend, will partner Botond Baráth at centre-back.

Mihály Korhut is likely to keep his place ahead of Tamás Kádár at left-back.

In midfield, Máté Pátkai is expected to come in for László Kleinheisler alongside Ádám Nagy.

Balázs Dzsudzsák will win his 102nd cap in the wing.

Even though he now plays his club football in the UAE Pro-League with Al-Ittihad Kalba SC, he’s still a key player for his national team.

Dominik Nagy and Dominik Szoboszlai will make up the attacking trident.

Up front will be Ádám Szalai.

He’s now scored 20 goals in his 55 international appearances.

They beat Croatia at home, will this Hungary side now defeat Wales?

As for Wales, they are not at full strength.

Despite the fact he’s not first choice at Crystal Palace, Wayne Hennessey will win his his 84th cap in goal.

Ahead of him, will be a very young side.

Connor Roberts will keep his place at right-back.

At centre-back, Ashley Williams’ poor form for Stoke means he’ll be left out with James Lawrence and Chris Mepham likely to start once again.

At left-back Ben Davies is available despite originally ruling himself out of contention so will win his 47th cap.

In midfield, Aaron Ramsey will not recover in time.

A big blow.

Ethan Ampadu is expected to come back in, displacing Matthew Smith.

He’ll be the anchor alongside Joe Allen.

Further forward, Dan James will start once again after sealing a £15 million move to Manchester United.

Harry Wilson will also start once again.

David Brooks, who scored off the bench on Saturday, is expected to come in for the more defensive minded Will Vaulks.

Up front, will be Wales’ talisman.

Gareth Bale has now scored 31 goals for his countries and will continue as the focal point of this side.

Will this side be victorious in Budapest?
