Huddersfield v Reading at Wembley
At Wembley this afternoon, two of the best sides in the Championship will play-off for the last spot in the Premier League 2017/2018.
Newcastle (champions) and Brighton are already up and safe and sound for what promises to be a belting Premier League season.
David Wagner’s Huddersfield and Jaap Stam’s Reading will be fighting it out to join them on what is always one of the finest days of the English football calendar.
How much is the play-off final worth?
Of all the games played in English football, it is safe to say that this is the most life-defining of them all.
For the winners, a chance to test themselves against the very best and grab the riches of the Premier League.
The losers are left to think what might have been and will watch on from afar as the richest league in the world goes about its business.
Considering Sunderland earned just under 100 million pounds last season from finishing bottom in the Premier League it is safe to say that the Championship play-off final is worth at least that.
At least £200m!
Ahead of Huddersfield v Reading, the BBC suggest that the Championship play-off final is worth 170 million pounds.
Judging by some estimates, which include parachute payments if you go down from the Premier League, this still feels conservative.
As can be seen on one of the graphics below, last year’s Championship play-off final was said to be worth 170 million pounds but was actually worth 198 million pounds.
Imagine playing in a game worth at least 200 million pounds! No pressure lads!
