How Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic trolled Cristiano Ronaldo after win over Portugal


Match-winner Aleksandar Mitrovic was keen to rub salt in the wounds of Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday, after dealing a blow to Portugal’s hopes of World Cup qualification.

Mitrovic makes the difference

Ronaldo and co. were of course back in action 24 hours ago.

In the nation’s eighth and final World Cup qualifier, A Selecao welcomed the aforementioned Serbia to Lisbon, for a highly-anticipated, and altogether crucial showdown.

Ahead of kick-off, Portugal, sitting pretty atop the Group A table, were aware that they required just a solitary point to be sure of a spot at next year’s Qatar showpiece.

When all was said and done, however, in one of the shocks of the qualification campaign thus far, Fernando Santos’ men failed to get the job done.

Despite taking the lead inside three minutes courtesy of Renato Sanches, the hosts were eventually put to the sword by two goals to one, as Dusan Tadic’s first-half equaliser was added to by Aleksandar Mitrovic at the death:

As alluded to above, though, their condemning of the 2016 European champions to the playoffs for next year’s World Cup did not provide quite enough satisfaction for one of Serbia’s stars.

The player in question? Match-winner Mitrovic.

As showcased below, footage of the Fulham star returning to the pitch at the Estadio da Luz has today gone viral online.

This comes with Mitrovic having been keen to aim a light-hearted dig at Portugal talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.

As many will no doubt recall, during this summer’s European Championships, Ronaldo, during a press conference, provided some health advice to those watching on from home, removing two bottles of Coca-Cola before urging fans to ‘drink water’:

In turn, last night, Mitrovic thought it a good opportunity to poke fun at the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner, returning to the field of play post-match whilst in possession of a can of Coke:
