How Everton could line up in the 2019/20 Premier League season

A big season for Marco Silva and Marcel Brands

Everton are a team full of potential and should they have as positive a summer transfer window as they did last year, anything is possible.

The Toffees signed a number of talented players last summer to lay the foundations of Marco Silva’s new-look Everton.

All of Richarlison, Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina and Bernard joined in permanent moves, while Andre Gomes and Kurt Zouma arrived on loan deals.

As a result of their successful summer, Everton’s director of football decided to abstain from the winter transfer window.

Now, it’s looking likely that the Toffees will go big this summer, and we’re going to take a look at how Everton could line up for their first Premier League game of the 2019/20 season.

It will come as no surprise that Jordan Pickford remains the number one at Goodison Park.

The former Sunderland man joined back in 2017, and has been a pretty reliable shot-stopper since then.

His England penalty heroics in the last international break will only strengthen his grip on the number one spot.

Though, Pickford will go into next season with a new back-up.

Everton will bring in Jonas Lössl on a free transfer next week when his contract at Huddersfield expires.

The Danish keeper may have been part of one of the worst defensive sides in the Premier League last season, but will provide decent enough cover for cup games and in case of a Pickford injury.

It’s been no secret that Everton’s defence has been one of their biggest problems for a number of years now.

In the 2017/18 season, Ronald Koeman simply couldn’t get his side to keep the ball out of the net, even with Jordan Pickford between the sticks.

While Sam Allardyce sort of got them back on track, Everton’s centre-back options of Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams left a lot to be desired.

As well as that, Cuco Martina was forced to play the majority of the campaign at left-back due to a Leighton Baines injury.

Now, Marco Silva and Marcel Brands look to have some stability at the back.

Michael Keane is thriving in the new system, while Marcel Brands moved to sign Lucas Digne, who has proven to be an incredibly shrewd signing.

Kurt Zouma was also impressive during his loan spell.

The Zouma conundrum

However, the big question ahead of next season is will Kurt Zouma return to Everton?

The Frenchman was brilliant for the Toffees on loan last season but with Chelsea under a transfer ban, can they afford to sell Zouma permanently?

Everton are said to have made Zouma a priority and the defender would be willing to return.

As a result, we predict that Chelsea will decide to sell Zouma and the player will slot into Everton’s defence for next season.

Alternatives, though, include Diego Llorente and Armando Izzo.

Meanwhile, the Toffees are also targeting a right-back according to the Liverpool Echo.

With Seamus Coleman turning 31 in October and Jonjoe Kenny on loan at Schalke, reinforcements are needed.

There haven’t been many full-backs linked with Everton but one that stands out is Santiago Arias.

Marcel Brands knows the player well from his time at PSV, and with Atletico Madrid seemingly in the market for a right-back, Arias could force a move.

Everton completed their second summer signing in the form of Andre Gomes this week.

The Portuguese midfielder was brilliant on loan in the last campaign, leading to a permanent transfer.

As a result, he will almost certainly feature heavily in Everton’s midfield next season.

It’s a similar case for Gylfi Sigurdsson in centre attacking midfield.

The Icelandic playmaker had his most successful goalscoring season to date, and will link up Everton’s midfield and attack next season.

Thank you all for your kind messages. Couldn’t be happier and I’m looking forward to start this season!

The big question in this position is will Idrissa Gueye be at Everton next year?

The Senegalese midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in January, but Everton would not let the player leave.

Now, they could return this summer, and it would be hard for the Toffees to stand in his way again.

One player that Everton have been linked with recently is Nice midfielder Wylan Cyprien.

The Frenchman would potentially be a shrewd signing for the Toffees and at 24-years-old, still has room to improve.

Though, Everton signing another central midfielder after Andre Gomes rests on the future of Idrissa Gueye.

This is where it gets interesting for Everton fans.

The Toffees are in the market for a left winger and a few top-tier names have been linked with moves to Goodison Park.

The most notable of them is David Neres.

Neres was crucial in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, while scoring 12 goals and assisting 15 across all competitions.

You’d expect those performances to place Neres out of Everton’s reach, however, he continues to be heavily linked with a move and is currently evens with Sky Bet to join the Toffees.

Richarlison even admitted recently that he’s encouraged his compatriot to join him at Goodison.

If Marcel Brands and Marco Silva were able to get a deal done, it would represent a humongous coup.

Other players that Everton have been linked with in that position include Barcelona’s Malcom and Lyon’s Bertrand Traore, who could also prove to be shrewd signings.

Finally, Everton are in dire need of a top-tier striker.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently the best option that they have, with Oumar Niasse likely to leave, and Everton actively trying to sell Cenk Tosun.

As a result, you would expect a striker to arrive this summer.

One name on the lips of most Everton fans right now is Moise Kean.

The Juventus striker has been linked with a move to Goodison and would represent a huge coup.

At just 19-years-old, Kean is already impressing in the Juventus first-team, and will only get better.

Other strikers linked with a move to Everton include Rafael Leao and Jean-Kévin Augustin, so the Toffees have some solid alternatives to Kean potentially lined up.
