Sweden 8 – Luxembourg 0!
Football has a way of making you look stupid in super quick fashion.
And, on Saturday two super powers of European football in France and Holland must be feeling that.
Group A always looked like being a group to keep an eye on in European World Cup qualifying as it featured France, Holland and Sweden.
No one could have expected what would transpire in recent games.
France sweating on World Cup spot
France for a long time looked like they would comfortably finish top of Group A.
But, in one of the biggest shocks in international football for some time, they were held to a 0-0 draw by Luxembourg in September.
France play in Bulgaria tonight and thanks to another incredible result from Sweden, they need to win.
Marcus Berg scores four!
Sweden beat Luxembourg 8-0 on Saturday.
Marcus Berg scored four for Sweden as they romped to a huge win. Other goal scorers included Andreas Granqvist (2), Mikael Lustig and Ola Toivonen.
The win takes Sweden top of Group A two points ahead of France. Les Bleus have tonight’s game in hand.
Holland all but out of World Cup qualifying
And, Holland are a whopping six points behind Sweden with an inferior goal difference to Sweden of -14.
This means Sweden are virtually assured of a play-off spot. And, Holland are all but out of World Cup qualifying.
Holland play in Belarus tonight and face Sweden at home on Tuesday but qualification hopes are all but over.
Advocaat: “Sweden will not win 8-0 versus Luxembourg”
To add insult to injury, Holland coach Dick Advocaat is looking rather silly this evening.
On September 29, 2017, Advocaat was asked in a press conference, what happens if Sweden beat Luxembourg 8-0.
Advocaat replied: “Sweden will not win 8-0 versus Luxembourg. What’s that for a stupid question? 8-0, I really do not believe that. I do not think I would take irresponsible risks if Sweden is well ahead. It’s a misconception that you’re more offensive with more attackers on the field.”
The former Sunderland manager was far from responsible for another poor qualifying campaign from Holland.
But, these unfortunate comments could well haunt Advocaat for some time.
