‘His price-tag has gone up’ – Jorginho’s agent quashes Chelsea exit links

The agent of Chelsea star Jorginho has moved to play down the rumours that his client could depart the club ahead of next season.

Jorginho’s Blues stint

Italian international Jorginho made the move to Stamford Bridge from Napoli in the summer of 2018, following Maurizio Sarri from the Stadio San Paolo to London.

However, the 28-year-old, much like his now-former boss, subsequently endured something of an up-and-down debut campaign with Chelsea.

A change of system for the Blues saw Jorginho moved into N’Golo Kante’s position at the base of the the club’s midfield, albeit in a deep-lying regista role, as opposed to Kante’s previous defensive-minded role.

And while the former Napoli standout went on to showcase that he is very much capable of controlling the tempo of proceedings when Chelsea are in possession, his defensive shortcomings were all-too regularly highlighted by the all-action stylings of the Premier League.

The current season, though, has seen Jorginho, to his credit, look much-improved.

Having settled further into the physical requirements of English football, the gifted Italian looks better equipped to run Chelsea’s midfield, with Jorginho himself citing ‘more determination’ on the defensive side of the ball as key to his upturn in form.

The Verona youth product has, as a result, gone on to establish himself as an integral member of Frank Lampard’s squad.

To this point in the campaign, Jorginho has appeared in all but 4 of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures, as well as the Blues’ 7 Champions League outings.

‘Nobody can afford that kind of investment’

Despite his growing importance at Stamford Bridge, however, reports over the course of the campaign have consistently hinted that Jorginho could be set for a swift return to Serie A.

Juventus have been the outfit most persistently-touted as a potential destination for the midfielder, where he would of course once again reunite with Maurizio Sarri.

Some outlets even went as far as to suggest that negotiations over a potential swap deal which would see Jorginho and Juve’s Miralem Pjanic swap clubs were underway.

As outlined above, however, if the latest comments on the part of Jorginho’s agent are anything to go by, then the chances of the 28-year-old departing Chelsea this summer appear slim to none.

Speaking in an interview with Calciomercato earlier today, Joao Santos was drawn on the rampant speculation surrounding his client.

And Santos went on to reveal his opinion that, due to a combination of Jorginho’s hefty price-tag, and the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, it currently looks ‘very unlikely’ that an offer will be forthcoming for the midfielder this summer:

‘His price-tag has certainly gone up over the last two years, as he has done well in London and become a regular for Italy.’

‘He is now the vice-captain at Chelsea and has amassed a great deal of experience playing in the Champions League and Europa League. I think it’s very unlikely an offer will come in for Jorginho, because nobody can afford to make that kind of investment in the market right now.’

‘Because of the pandemic, nobody knows when we can return to normal or even play with fans in the stadium, so that’s a big problem for the transfer market.’
