Lionel Messi was in inspired form on Friday night, as Argentina picked up all three points in a crunch meeting with Uruguay.

Messi and co. are currently lining out at the latest edition of the Copa America.

Whilst Euro 2020 continues to take the headlines across Europe, in South America, focus is centered very much on the battle for Copa supremacy.

Hosts Brazil stand as the clear front-runners to go all the way over the weeks ahead, with the Selecao having done their favourites tag little damage en route to respective 3 and 4-0 drubbings of Venezuela and Peru.

Standing in the way of Tite’s men, though, could yet be Argentina.

Whilst the Albiceleste have not exactly set the tournament alight thus far, they have managed to collect a respectable four points, three of which were forthcoming late last night.

After being held to a 1-1 stalemate by Chile in their Copa opener, Argentina made the trip to Brasilia, for a crunch Group B showdown with Uruguay.

A tense 90 minutes unsurprisingly ensued, with a solitary goal, when all was said and done, having proven telling.

The goal in question arrived inside the opening quarter of an hour, when a typically pinpoint delivery on the part of Lionel Messi was nodded home at the far post by Guido Rodriguez:

As outlined above, however, his crucial assist proved far from Messi’s only standout contribution, amid a stellar all-round performance.

The Barcelona talisman proved a thorn in the side of Uruguay’s backline all night, picking up pockets of space, before driving forward with pace and intent:

Messi’s relentless efforts carried right through to the matchup’s close, as the 33-year-old took the responsibility of keeping hold of possession, to see out a much-needed 1-0 Argentina win:

This marked Messi’s 2nd-straight standout display, after the veteran attacker shone en route to a goal and Man of the Match award versus Chile.

And this has since given rise to a remarkable set of statistics, showcasing the true extent of Messi’s efforts to carry a rather average Albiceleste outfit to silverware this summer:
