Highlights: Anjorin shines & Billy Gilmour builds fitness with Chelsea’s U21s

Chelsea’s under-21 side were in cup action on Wednesday evening, with a number of notable takeaways from the game discussed below.

Chelsea out of EFL Trophy

The Blues took on League One outfit Bristol Rovers, in an EFL Trophy clash.

Chelsea headed into the tie in desperate need of three points to keep their qualification hopes alive.

However, despite some positive individual displays, the Londoners eventually fell to a 4-3 defeat, leaving them bottom of Group 12.

Brandon Hanlan opened the scoring for the home side 10 minutes in.

Chelsea hit back just moments later, when Tino Anjorin slotted home from Valentino Livramento’s superb through-ball.

The home side soon took back control, though, netting twice before the hour-mark.

A second Anjorin strike, followed by a goal from Lewis Marcel, then brought Chelsea back on level terms, but a late Josh Hare effort eventually proved the difference, as Bristol emerged with all three points.

Gilmour returns & Anjorin bags a brace

On a fairly disappointing evening for Chelsea’s youngsters, there were nevertheless a handful of positives to take away.

First, 18-year-old Anjorin, who was handed his senior debut by Frank Lampard last season, looked lively throughout the 90 minutes, and, as outlined above, scored a brace.

Elsewhere, Billy Gilmour got some much-needed minutes under his belt.

The Scotsman missed around four months of action after picking up a knee injury vs Crystal Palace back in July.

And after a brief return to action last week for Scotland’s under-21s, in which Gilmour was sent off after just 10 minutes on the pitch, the youngster is now making significant strides in his recovery, having managed an hour against Bristol.
