EFL Cup final blow
Manchester United’s progression to the Europa League last 16 was smoother than butter. The only downside of their 4-0 aggregate win over Saint-Etienne was an injury to Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The scorer of the only goal in the second leg, he had to leave the field midway through the first half. It was a suspected hamstring injury.
While it wasn’t too serious and Jose Mourinho hopes to have him back soon, it’s a blow not to have him for EFL Cup final against Southampton this Sunday. Mkhitaryan’s importance to United is clear and the stats back it up. They’re a much stronger outfit with him in the side than out of it. Looking at their Premier League campaign shows this.
Of the 15 games that Mkhitaryan has appeared in, United have won 60%. For the ten without him, they have a 40% win rate, a drop of 20%. With Mkhitaryan, they score more goals and concede less. He’s directly contributed by scoring three goals and providing one assist. He’s scored three times and provided four assists in other competitions.
