‘He laughs at everyone’: Former Spurs star van der Vaart launches scathing attack on Man United’s Harry Maguire

Quotes on the part of former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart surrounding the talents of Manchester United star Harry Maguire have gone viral online over the last 24 hours.

United stint

English international Maguire made the move to Old Trafford last summer, from Leicester City.

The 27-year-old set Man United back a massive £80 million, a world-record fee for a defender.

Maguire has since unsurprisingly gone on to establish himself as a mainstay in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backline, having notched starts in all 34 of the Red Devils’ Premier League outings to this point in the campaign.

While the early weeks of the season saw the powerful stopper hint that he was exactly the type of dominant presence which had for so long been missing from United’s backline, though, recent months have seen such a suggestion often called into question.

Since the return of English football alone, schoolboy defending versus the likes of Tottenham and Bournemouth has seen Maguire’s shortcomings in one-on-one situations cost his side goals.

‘I screw up, but I earn so much’

Such hit-and-miss form has, in turn, given rise to heavy criticism from some quarters, with Maguire’s monumental transfer fee having seen the former Sheffield United United standout inevitably (and unfavourably) compared to Liverpool stalwart Virgil van Dijk.

One individual, meanwhile, to have previously used such a comparison to highlight the flaws in the United star’s game, is Rafael van der Vaart.

Speaking back in October, the former Tottenham creator revealed his opinion that Maguire’s abilities are comparable to those of a Sunday League footballer:

‘If he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300m. If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this (what Maguire does on the pitch). I mean that seriously. A bit silly to say, but I really think so.’

And, as outlined above, after being granted the opportunity to discuss the English international during another interview this week, van der Vaart once again made his feelings crystal clear.

During an interview with Dutch TV station Ziggo, the 37-year-old this time suggested that Maguire himself likely can’t believe that he has managed to earn such a healthy living through his talents on the pitch:

‘I think Maguire goes home every day and tells his wife: ‘I screw up, but I earn so much. They really believe I’m good.’ I really think so, he laughs at everyone.’
