Havertz targeting Euro 2020 glory as Chelsea man opens up about the ‘new Ronaldo’ labels given to him

Havertz targeting Euro 2020 glory as Chelsea man opens up about the ‘new Ronaldo’ labels given to him

Havertz’s Chelsea pressure

Kai Havertz has long been viewed as one of the golden boys of European football. His move to Chelsea was married with great pressure and expectation. The sizeable transfer fee also did nothing but further that weight on his young shoulders.

Havertz spoke about such expectations ahead of Germany’s opening Euro 2020 meeting with France, suggesting that he was expected to become the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo.’

“People expect you to be the new Cristiano Ronaldo,” Havertz said in an interview with Suddeutsche Zeitung. “But it won’t be that fast, everything is new and I really didn’t play my best football at the beginning.

“I felt a completely different pressure than before in Leverkusen.”

The former Bayer Leverkusen man finished the season with 4 goals and 5 assists in the Premier League. Not a huge number, however he certainly embarked on an upward trajectory in terms of performance following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel’s faith in his compatriot saw Havertz start and score the only goal of Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League final win over Manchester City.

“I’m glad that I was able to end the season with this goal in the Champions League final,” Havertz added.

“The goal was important for the history of the club, but it was important to me to have also done very well personally.”

Havertz targeting Euro glory

Germany’s last international tournament ended in embarrassment, with an exit in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.

World champions at the time, Havertz was merely a spectator of the disappointment, but feels his triumph in the Champions League can help propel him to a positive tournament with Germany.

“We’re with the national team, we have different processes and different goals here,” said the youngster. “Of course, this title gives me tailwind and a lot of self-confidence, but there’s no point in feeling like a Champions League winner if you screw up the European Championship afterwards.”
