Guardiola explains why Ruben Dias could not play for Man City in the 3-1 win over Swansea

Guardiola explains why Ruben Dias could not play for Man City in the 3-1 win over Swansea

Dias absence explained

Pep Guardiola was without two first-team squad members for his side’s 3-1 win over Swansea City. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach explained that Ruben Dias missed the match through illness, and Fernandinho was not passed fit.

“Ruben had a fever,” he said. “He still has some problems with the stomach. That’s why he couldn’t train yesterday.”

“Fernandinho had some problems, some niggles in the quads and he was not able to come here to play.”

Rodrigo was substituted after suffering a knock in a heavy challenge with Swansea’s Yan Dhanda, but Guardiola is confident he will recover promptly:

I didn’t speak with him but the doctor didn’t tell me anything,” said the Spanish coach.

“Hopefully, he will be fit. We will see in the next hours. He’s playing really well. His presence, his personality. He is playing really well, like the last few weeks. He has [played well] all season, I would say.”

Rodri has been a difference-maker for City at the base of the club’s midfield this season, meaning they will be sweating on his fitness ahead of a tough run of games.

Guardiola appreciates record-breaking City

Manchester City recorded their 15th win in a row in all competitions on Wednesday, setting a new record. Guardiola is impressed with how the run has been put together over the hectic festive period:

“The record will be broken for sure, because sports is like this, but it means a lot, to do what we have done in the winter time and Christmas time is quite remarkable.”

“It is the toughest time, but what is important is the way we are still playing with our consistency. We have an incredible week ahead of us and we will approach it game by game.”

City now face a tough run of games, with Spurs, Everton and Arsenal to come in the league, followed by two legs against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, either side of another testing tie against high-flying West Ham. Guardiola will hope to have as many of his players fit as possible.
