Guardiola backs Bernardo Silva to regain top form after being ‘tired mentally’ last season

Man City vs Arsenal

One of this weekend’s more high-profile Premier League fixtures pits Arsenal against Manchester City.

The Gunners are set to enter proceedings in fine form, boasting an almost perfect record in 2020/21.

After seeing off Liverpool earlier this month, the Gunners booked their spot in the last-eight of the League Cup.

And, barring a defeat at Anfield, Arsenal’s start to the Premier League season has also been flawless.

As for Manchester City, they have played one less game than their upcoming opponents, and currently sit down in 14th in the English top-flight, with a disappointing 4 points on the board.

With Arsenal having also managed to dispatch City the last time the two sides met, in the FA Cup earlier this year, meanwhile, the north Londoners will no doubt enter Saturday’s clash confident of picking up a positive result.

Guardiola on Bernardo Silva

Ahead of this evening’s clash, Pep Guardiola has been discussing Bernardo Silva.

The midfielder enjoyed a sensational 2018/19 campaign for the Citizens, filling the role of Kevin De Bruyne, who was injured over lengthy stretches of the season, very well.

However, last season did not see Bernardo reach anywhere near the same heights.

With De Bruyne once again injured, though, City will no doubt be looking to their Portuguese standout to step up.

And one man who is certainly of the opinion that Silva is capable of doing just that is Guardiola.

When discussing the former Monaco man pre-Arsenal, Guardiola suggested that his dip in form last time out was largely down to mental fatigue, before voicing his belief that Silva will enjoy ‘a very good season’ this time around:

“He didn’t have time to refresh, he was exhausted and his mind was exhausted and he struggled with this. It is not because he didn’t want it, it was because we demand a lot of the players and sometimes it is not possible.

“In the NBA – the best league in basketball and we can say the Premier League is one of the best in football – they have three or four months break, they play a lot of games – 70 or 80 – but they have three or four months’ break.”

“With Bernardo it was like this – he couldn’t refresh mentally and started the season tired mentally.

“But I have a feeling he’ll have a very good season this season because he’s coming back in many things to what we’ve seen in the past.”
