Granit Xhaka signs new four-year Arsenal deal following summer of Roma links

Roma links

Granit Xhaka has been a mainstay in Arsenal’s midfield since his move from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

The Swiss international has made 220 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners, in which he scored 13 and assisted 20.

However, this summer did look to be the end of the 28-year-old’s stint in north London.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma were heavily linked with Xhaka and it was reported back in June that personal terms had been agreed.

However, Roma and Arsenal appear to have been some way apart on an acceptable price for the midfielder.

The Athletic reported on July 30th that, after Roma failed to make a suitable bid for him, Arsenal were preparing to offer Xhaka a new contract this summer:

Now, football.london’s Chris Wheatley has broken the news that Xhaka signed a new four-year deal with the club on Tuesday.

It is added that Jose Mourinho has spoken directly with Xhaka, who told the Portuguese about his new deal:

At the time of writing, Arsenal are yet to confirm the deal.
