Graeme Souness shames Chelsea’s two lightweights & why Liverpool’s midfield ‘get away with it’

Fulham vs Chelsea

After beating Tottenham, Chelsea take on Fulham in the west London derby today.

Are Fulham already doomed for the drop?

Scott Parker is now in charge of the Cottagers after Claudio Ranieri was sacked last week.

However Fulham’s survival hopes look bleak as they are already ten points from safety.

Can Chelsea break into the top four?

The Blues are sixth in the league , four points behind Arsenal and five points behind Man United.

Graeme Souness shames Chelsea’s two lightweights

In his weekly op-ed in the Sunday Times, Graeme Souness has outlined the problems in Chelsea’s midfield.

Most have focused on how N’Golo Kante has been shifted from his defensive midfield role this season.

But for Souness, Kante isn’t the problem. Instead it’s the two guys who usually play alongside the Frenchman:

People make a big deal of where N’Golo Kante plays in Chelsea’s midfield, but that misses the bigger point, which is that they don’t get enough goals there from Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.

Jorginho and Kovacic are neat and tidy players, but not terribly effective.

Jorginho and Kovacic are lightweights. That’s the top and bottom of it. They’re typical modern midfielders, who keep possession on the halfway line but don’t hurt teams.

Liverpool’s midfield ‘get away with it’

Souness has also analysed the quality in Liverpool’s midfield.

The Scot believes Liverpool’s strikers help mask their deficiencies:

Liverpool’s five midfielders have six league goals between them.

They get away with it because of the front three they have, but it’s not enough from James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita.
