Charlie Austin v West Ham

Good for Tottenham & Man United, terrible for Charlie Austin

Southampton 1 – Huddersfield Town 1

Southampton’s winless run stretched to seven matches on Saturday.

And Mauricio Pellegrino’s next to matches are against Tottenham and Man United.

As for Huddersfield, David Wagner’s side remain in dreamland as Christmas rolls around. A 1-1 draw at Southampton followed last weekend’s 4-1 win at Watford.

This time Huddersfield had to come from behind. Charlie Austin fired the Saints ahead, but the in-form Laurent Depoitre found a leveler ten minutes later.

The result left Huddersfield in 11th and Southampton in 13th.

After finding the target, Austin missed a glorious chance to double his tally when he dragged a shot narrowly wide of the post.

The striker could also have been sent off, while his day finished early as he was forced out with an injury.

After the game Pellegrino confirmed that Austin pulled his hamstring against the Terriers.

That’s likely to mean he misses the next two to three weeks of action.

Tottenham & Man United

Austin’s absence will be good news for Spurs and Man United.

Following those tough fixtures, Southampton have games against Crystal Palace, Fulham and Watford at the start of 2018.

Austin to be banned?

The only silver lining for Austin regarding his injury is that is likely to be banned by the Premier League.

Austin clashed with Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and could well find himself in serious trouble.

Before half-time, Austin was set free on goal and as he went for the ball with the Huddersfield goalkeeper, managed to hit Jonas Lossl.

The Huddersfield custodian was able to continue playing but had to receive plenty of treatment.

And, with referee Lee Probert completely missing the incident, there are now suggestions that Austin faces a three match ban.
