Good news for Chelsea ahead of Aston Villa as Ruben Loftus-Cheek bags brace in QPR drubbing

Chelsea Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Chelsea’s friendly meeting with Queens Park Rangers earlier today saw Ruben Loftus-Cheek continue his push towards a return to full fitness with a pair of goals.

Premier League return incoming

Following a near-3-month hiatus, football is of course gearing up for an imminent return in the UK.

With the COVID-19-enforced break finally set to come to an end, the Premier League will get back underway with a pair of fixtures on Wednesday night, before the first full game-week since March kicks off two days later.

Ahead of getting their respective campaigns back underway, meanwhile, a number of English top-flight clubs have organised friendly outings over the course of the last week.

The behind-closed-doors matchups are intended to aid players in finding match sharpness, as well as ensuring that a swift return to a hectic schedule over the coming weeks doesn’t result in a spike in injuries.

Loftus-Cheek among the goals

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were one of several sides to have continued their preparations for the season’s resumption earlier today, with the Blues having welcomed fellow Londoners QPR to Stamford Bridge.

And, after putting Reading to the sword by a solitary goal on Wednesday, Chelsea’s positive form continued this afternoon.

The capital outfit’s latest win, though, was rather more emphatic than their hard-fought downing of Reading.

An utterly one-sided affair in London eventually saw Lampard’s men emerge with a 7-1 victory.

Billy Gilmour (2), Mason Mount, Willian and Olivier Giroud were all among the goals for the hosts.

However, what will no doubt be viewed as the biggest positive for Chelsea following their latest friendly outing was the contribution of Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

English midfielder Loftus-Cheek has not featured in a competitive fixture this season, after suffering a ruptured achilles tendon in May of last year.

The 24-year-old, though, now looks closer than ever to a return to full fitness.

Loftus-Cheek bagged a brace versus QPR, amid another impressive all-round display.

The 10-time capped international now looks set to add to Frank Lampard’s wealth of options in the middle of the park ahead of the Premier League’s return, with Loftus-Cheek potentially even in contention to feature from the off versus Aston Villa next weekend.
