Gini Wijnaldum could still remain at Liverpool beyond current season

Gini Wijnaldum could still remain at Liverpool beyond current season

Wijnaldum’s Liverpool future

Georginio Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in 2016, departing Newcastle for a fee in the region of £24m.

The Dutchman was often used in an advanced position for the Magpies. However, under Jurgen Klopp, the 30-year-old has dropped into a deeper role.

In turn, alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, ‘Gini’ has formed a devastating midfield trident, which has proven absolutely essential to Liverpool’s success over recent seasons.

At present, however, it looks as though Wijnaldum is heading for the Anfield exit door.

The former Newcastle man’s contract situation has been up in the air for some time now, with his current terms set to expire in the summer.

In turn, conflicting reports have spread regarding what exactly is set to unfold.

Speculation last summer went as far as to suggest that the Premier League champions had no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

The Athletic then reported in December, though, that both Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool want to keep the Dutchman at Anfield.

Last month, meanwhile, claims began to mount that Wijnaldum has agreed to the terms of a pre-contract with Spanish powerhouse, FC Barcelona.

Wijnaldum to stay put?

No official announcement regarding Wijnaldum’s future has yet been forthcoming.

But with just over a month of the campaign left to play, Liverpool’s fans are no doubt predicting the exit of one of their key men this summer.

However, a report from the Telegraph on Tuesday has offered the Reds faithful some hope regarding a Wijnaldum stay.

It is suggested that the midfielder has not yet ruled out the possibility of remaining at Anfield beyond the terms of his current contract.

The report also highlights links to Barcelona, as well as claiming that Inter Milan have expressed an interest. No pre-contract, though, has yet been agreed upon, with the door therefore still open for Wijnaldum to remain at Liverpool, on a new deal.
