Gigi Buffon savaged in the Italian media after the Spain game

Italians turn on Gigi Buffon

Something quite remarkable happened on Saturday night in Madrid.

Italy lost their first qualifier in almost 11 years, as they were beaten 3-0 in Spain.

Real Madrid’s Isco was the star of the show for La Roja scoring a double, while Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata scored a killer third.

After the match, in the post match post-mortem and ratings, the Italians turned on Juventus legend Gigi Buffon.

Is Buffon past it?

Most still consider Buffon to be one of the best goalies in world football.

But is the tide changing in his own homeland?

Leading Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport savaged the Azzurri legend in their post match ratings, handing the keeper 4.5 out of 10.

But it was the justification for that grade which has come to the attention of Buffon fans.

GdS are now suggesting that Buffon, 39, may be too old for the national team. They wrote “time flies and his reactions and reflexes are no longer at their peak. Isco’s free-kick was not angled or string. Gigi is no long super.”

It’s now openly being discussed whether Buffon is decline.

Marco Verratti also slammed

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti was also slammed in the Italian press. Gazzetta gave the midfielder a 4.5, just like Buffon.

Verratti was dominated by Isco in the middle of the park.

The pink paper claimed Verratti was “overwhelmed”.

The Spanish ratings

The Spanish papers largely concurred with their Italian counterparts.

Buffon and Verratti scored terrible grades in Mundo Deportivo and AS.
