The task of replacing Leonardo Bonucci seemed like an impossible one for Juventus when the world-class centre-half left for AC Milan. However, their next signing could go some way to repairing their damaged defence.
Howedes’ agent Volker Struth said: “Yes, Juve wants, Benedikt Höwedes wants – we are basically clear.”
Bild report that Benedikt Howedes has agreed on personal terms with the Italian champions. Now all Juventus have to do is agree on a fee with Schalke. The 29-year-old has been a rock at the back for the Bundesliga side.
Howedes has pedigree at international level too, playing every minute of Germany’s triumphant 2014 World Cup campaign. Although his preferred position is at centre-half, he proved his versatility in that tournament.
Should this move go through, it will be a big one for all involved, especially Howedes. He’s played for Schalke for his entire career and is believed to have turned down big moves in the past. Liverpool are among his other suitors.
