Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has admitted that, for the first time in his Camp Nou career, he feels inferior to Spanish rivals Real Madrid.
Pique’s comments come on the back of the Blaugrana being comprehensively dispatched of by Real over two legs in the Spanish Super Cup, with goals from Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema last night leading to a 5-1 aggregate victory for Los Blancos.
While so often such a scoreline can flatter the victors, this was certainly not the case in this tie.
Zinedine Zidane’s Champions League winners looked on a completely different level to their illustrious opponents, dominating in every facet of the matchup, while Barca looked a shell of their once great selves.
And today, in the aftermath of his side’s 2-0 Bernabeu loss, Blaugrana legend Gerard Pique has admitted to feeling a level below that of his side’s fiercest rivals:
‘The season is very long and there is room for improvement.’
‘But in nine years at Barcelona this is the first time that I have felt we are inferior to Madrid.’
‘It is true that they won the Champions League last year, but we came here and won not long before that.’ (via Marca)
