Tottenham 0 – Manchester United 1
Tottenham versus Man United was billed as the acid test for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer came out of Sunday’s Premier League match at Wembley with his 100% winning record still intact.
A goal from Marcus Rashford was enough for Man United to beat Spurs.
After six wins on the spin under Solskjaer, Man United are now level on points with Arsenal.
Will United finish the season in the top four?
Gary Neville on how Man United copied Liverpool
On the Gary Neville podcast, the Sky Sports pundit revealed his belief that Man United learned from Liverpool in how to tackle Tottenham.
Back in September, Liverpool beat Spurs 2-1 at Wembley.
Liverpool deployed their attacking trident in that match – Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – and Neville suggested that Solskjaer copied that blueprint with Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial:
Tottenham had a couple of chances as well but Manchester United looked really threatening in the channels.
It reminded me so much of the Liverpool game earlier in the season at Wembley when Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane got in down the sides of the Tottenham centre-backs.
It looked to me like Solskjaer had watched that game and thought that’s where I can hurt them.
It was clever. He proved in that first-half that he can live in a big game against a big manager and a big team.
Problems for Juan Mata
Neville also looked at some of the other selection choices made by Solskjaer since arriving at Old Trafford.
Juan Mata was left on the United bench against Tottenham.
Neville believes that this is significant as Solskjaer returns Man United back to the club’s philosophy:
As the weeks have gone on you’ve seen more of his imprint on the team in terms of the attacking play and the runs forward. The profile of the team has changed.
We talked about it during commentary, gone are Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku from the starting line-up.
I said a few years ago on Monday Night Football when Mata was signed that he was a wonderful player, but I thought it was a breach of philosophy. I didn’t think he fitted the profile of a Manchester United player.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is picking the profile of player Manchester United need and that’s players who have the energy to get from box to box quickly and counter-attack with quality. You’ve seen that in the last few weeks.
Liverpool vs Man City
Towards the end of the podcast, Gary Neville also gave his updated opinion on who will win the title.
Neville has been advocating that Man City will win the league for the majority of the season.
However the former Man United defender dropped two nuggets of information.
Without naming names, Neville revealed that some of his Man United supporting buddies want Liverpool to win the league, not Man City.
Secondly, Neville revealed he’s told Jamie Carragher in private that he believes Liverpool can do it.
