Former English international striker Gary Lineker has this evening taken another not-so-subtle pop at Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, after the Frenchman netted a brace versus APOEL Nicosia.
Social media jab
Match of the Day presenter Lineker surprised many when he took to Twitter last month to reveal his opinion that Benzema is ‘overrated’:
Is it me or is Benzema a tad overrated? A goal every other game in a team as strong as Real Madrid is nada especial. Decent not great.

This jibe sparked a public debate over Benzema’s talents, with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane having jumped to the defence of his fellow countryman:
For people who know about football to say that, is a disgrace; for me he is the best there is. I don’t know if people think the No 9 has to score 50 goals. Karim is not going to score 60 goals, but he will score 25, and he will give 30 passes to goal. Such comments annoy me but they cannot be avoided. For me he is the best by some distance.”
The Real Madrid coach continued: “Everyone can give an opinion and some people might believe a No 9 has to score more goals but it’s not just about that. Karim has everything. He scores goals. He doesn’t score 50 but he does get 25 or 30 a year, that’s what he’ll score this season. I’m more interested with how he combines with other players. What pleases me is good football. People can give their opinion that a No 9 should be about goals, okay, but that’s not my philosophy.”
Kane vs Benzema
However, keen not to be outdone, Lineker returned to Twitter during a Premier League clash between Tottenham and Liverpool on October 22nd:
Harry Kane scores again. Thankfully Zidane thinks Benzema is the best so they won’t be interested in poaching him.

And, in what is now becoming an almost embarrassing trend, Lineker has this evening taken YET ANOTHER swipe at Benzema, after the Blancos hitman netted a brace during his side’s 6-0 demolition of APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League:
2 goals for Benzema. He’s back.

The post was clearly intended in a sarcastic tone, in reference to the fact that when Benzema finally got his name on the scoresheet (he has only scored 1 goal in La Liga this season), it came against minnows APOEL.
