Gareth Southgate planning major England change in midfield vs Sweden

England manager Gareth Southgate is planning to swap Dele Alli for Eric Dier in the Three Lions’ quarter-final clash with Sweden, according to Telegraph Sport.

The 22-year-old has been struggling with a thigh injury which he suffered during England’s World Cup opener against Tunisia and is now struggling for fitness.

Dele has been unable to complete 90 minutes in the tournament so far having been subbed off against Tunisia, Panama and Colombia.

Gareth Southgate’s side are looking to book their place in their first semi-final at a major tournament for the first time since 1990 as they take on Sweden this afternoon.

Ahead of the clash, Southgate is facing one big decision, whether or not to replace Dele in midfield, and if so, who will replace him?

The England manager is likely to select between either Eric Dier or Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the latter having twice replaced Dele off the bench in Russia.

The Telegraph understand that Dier is leading candidate to replace his fellow Tottenham Hotspur teammate, with Jordan Henderson adopting a more advanced role.

Should Dier be the man Southgate opts for, the Three Lions are not expected to change their 3-5-2 formation which has brought them much success throughout the tournament so far.
