England boss Gareth Southgate has, on Monday evening, provided an update on his squad, ahead of the nation’s meeting with the Czech Republic.
The Three Lions are of course set to round out their Euro 2020 group stage campaign tomorrow night.
Southgate and co. will welcome the Czech Republic to Wembley, with memories of a 5-0 drubbing of their upcoming opponents back in 2019 still fresh in the memory.
Tuesday’s matchup, though, marks something of a peculiar one.
This comes with England in the knowledge that, when it comes to their chances of a deep tournament run, a draw with the table-topping Czechs could actually prove their best bet.
The winners of Group D are scheduled to take on the runners-up from the ‘Group of Death’ – likely to be one of France, Portugal or Germany – in the Euros’ Last-16.
Group D’s runners-up, on the other hand, face a meeting with their Group E counterparts, likely to be one of Sweden, Slovakia or a stuttering Spain.
‘Hoping they can play a part’
As such, it has been widely suggested that Gareth Southgate could opt to rotate his squad on Tuesday, to afford some of England’s bench-bound stars a morale-boosting appearance.
And, if the latest comments on the part of the Three Lions boss are anything to go by, then this looks set to be the case.
Speaking in a press conference this evening, Southgate was drawn on the possibility of Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson taking to the pitch versus the Czech Republic. And the ex-Middlesbrough boss went on to explain:
‘Different situations given how long they’ve missed. Both are training well and will be involved tomorrow.’
‘They have already had a huge impact on training and the squad.’
‘Of course they want to get on the pitch and we’re hoping they can play a big part.’

Next up was an inevitable question regarding the latest on Chelsea pair Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell. Both players were forced into self isolation earlier this evening, after coming into close contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour, who has since tested positive for Covid-19.
Southgate, though, admitted that, as things stand, the potential participation of the Blues stars on Tuesday remains up in the air:
#ENG Southgate not sure yet if Mount & Chilwell will be available vs Czech Republic. “There’s still discussions & investigations going on behind the scenes. We have to find out over the next 12 hours or so.”
