Another week, another Gareth Bale golf update.

A fortnight ago, during an interview with PGA Tour host Erik Anders Lang, Bale defended his love of golf in relation to criticism received during his time at Real Madrid. The 30-year-old Welsh star said:

A lot of people have problems with me playing golf, I don’t know what the reason is. I’ve spoken to doctors and everybody’s fine with it.

The media have this perception that it’s not good for me. ‘You should be resting, it can cause problems, injuries.’

In America, I know Steph Curry plays maybe on the morning of a game. Here, if I play two days before a game it’s like ‘what’s he doing?’

Bale also argued that golf can actually help his performances on the football pitch. He said:

You can get away from the football, away from anything negative that’s going on, and reset your mind, and the next day you feel a bit more fresh and ready to go and concentrate and feel better about football again.

This week, Bale has pushed his golf agenda once again in a new photo.

A picture is doing the rounds on social media from Real Madrid training this week.

While the rest of the Real Madrid squad band together for a group picture, Bale is stood by himself, off to the side, as the forward practiced his golf swing.

The Spanish press take Gareth Bale’s bait

Spanish paper El Confidential have been fished by Bale.

To be clear, it seems obvious that Bale was having a laugh with his golf pose. It was a joke.

However, El Confidential have been triggered by the gesture, as they’ve old their readers:

The Welshman mocked journalists who associate his golf practice with injuries and disinterest in playing football.

The Welshman does not have all the fans on his side. No footballer, no matter how good he is, can please everyone. But with Bale it is difficult to say that, when his time at Real Madrid ends, he will be missed.

It’s worth mentioning that Bale’s golf jokes are actually kind of old in the tooth.

Bale had repeatedly shown his golf swing at training: sometimes as a joke, other times when he didn’t realise he was being filmed.

For the record, Bale is under contract at Real Madrid until 2022, and it’s difficult to see him leaving anytime soon.
