Fulham vs Middlesbrough: Match preview

This week’s Championship action is set to get underway on Friday evening with Fulham and Middlesbrough going head-to-head.

There are currently 12 positions separating the two outfits in England’s second division with Fulham up in 4th spot and Middlesbrough down in 16th place.

Yet despite their contrasting league positions, this clash should prove to be a tight affair.

Jonathan Woodgate’s inaugural season in management got off to an awful start with it evening looking like, at one point, that Boro could be in for a relegation scrap.

However, the former Tottenham and Real Madrid defender looks to be finding his feet in the Middlesbrough dugout.

The Teessiders are undefeated in their last five Championship outings, one of which saw Boro hand table-topping West Brom just their second league defeat of the season.

Middlesbrough’s defence has also tightened up somewhat recently with the emergence of promising young full-back Djed Spence a huge boost for cash-strapped Boro.

The 19-year-old has been thriving in Middlesbrough’s backline and was even named the EFL Young Player of the Month for December.

Jonny Howson is also impressing in his new role at centre-back for Boro.

As a result, the North East outfit should prove a tough nut to crack for a Fulham side that looks to have their eye on a swift return to the Premier League.

Scott Parker’s side have won three of their last five league outings and boast a fairly impressive attacking threat.

However, just three points currently separate Fulham from 7th place, meaning they can’t really afford to slip up on Friday.

These two sides last faced off in October of 2019 in a Championship clash at the Riverside.

That tie ended 0-0 with Fulham playing the majority of the game with 10 men.
