Fulham vs Liverpool prediction: Fulham 0-4 Liverpool

Fulham welcome Liverpool to Craven Cottage for Super Sunday’s early-afternoon kick-off.

Fulham are onto their 3rd manager this season. Slaviša Jokanović lasted until 14 November, picking up just five points from twelve Premier League games. An average of 0.42 points per game.

Premier League winner, Claudio Ranieri, then took charge up until 28 February, picking up twelve points from sixteen Premier League games. An average of 0.75 points per game.

Scott Parker has now taken charge, on a caretaker manager basis, until the end of the season. So far he has yet to pick up a point from his two games in charge.

Survival from relegation looks nigh impossible at this stage for Fulham. They are thirteen points adrift of Burnley and Southampton. They would need to win all eight of their remaining games to hit the forty-point line, where many believe equals safety.

This looks unlikely for a side that has won just four league games this season who are currently on a losing run of six straight matches, in the Premier League.

Liverpool, on the other hand, need a win to keep the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the table. They have drawn each of their last three Premier League away games and will be acutely aware that a point here simply won’t be enough.

Following big wins against Burnley and Bayern Munich in the past week, scoring seven goals in the process, the signs are there they are clicking into gear in time for the run in.

But is it too little too late? Can they still close that gap?

Fulham’s last win again Liverpool here came in 2011. Clint Dempsey giving them a 1-0 win with a goal five minutes from time, against ten-man Liverpool. They are huge outsiders to repeat the feat here, at 11/1.

There has never been a draw between these two sides, in the Premier League, at Craven Cottage, in thirteen matches here. If you think a stalemate is overdue here, you can find odds of 6/1.

Liverpool have won each of their last five matches against Fulham, in the Premier League. They are the odds-on favourites to keep that run going at 1/4.

Aleksandar Mitrovic hasn’t scored for Fulham for six consecutive matches. He has never gone seven Premier League games without a goal for Fulham. He is 11/1 to score first or 3/1 to score at any time to end his mini-drought.

Mohamed Salah also hasn’t scored for Liverpool for six consecutive matches; his longest run without scoring since signing for Liverpool last season. If you believe form is temporary, class is permanent, you can back him at 11/4 to score first or 8/13 to score at any time.

Sadio Mané is in red hot form in the league at the moment, with eight goals in his last eight games. He carried that form into the Champions League against Bayern with a brace in midweek. He is 9/2 to score first or 11/10 to score at any time.

While two games is too small a sample to read anything into as far as a new manager is concerned, performances for Fulham seem fairly consistent with the level Ranieri had Fulham at before his dismissal.

It took a while for Ranieri’s methods to sink in, but we can see a gradual increase of the xG line under Ranieri from around 0.7 expected goals per game under Jokanović, to more than double that, at over 1.5 when he departed.

At the other end of the pitch, their expected goals against, trending around 1.5 for the entire time Ranieri was in charge, had risen to 2.0 in the weeks before he was dismissed. That, at least, has been reduced a little by Parker. Although still higher than Ranieri’s almost entire time in charge.

This all suggests that Ranieri was doing a good job from a coaching perspective in improving the underlying performances to put Fulham in a position to earn more points. However, perhaps fine margins or luck prevented them picking up the points they deserved at times.

What is clear, is that Liverpool are rightly clear favourites for a reason here. The gulf in quality at the back suggests Fulham could struggle to get even a whiff of goal. While at the other end, Liverpool are creating chances worth an average of two goals per game.

Given the form Liverpool are in at the moment, you suspect it may even be a lot more.
