Fresh hope N’Golo Kante will return for Chelsea
N’Golo Kante still hasn’t returned to training with the rest of his Chelsea team mates as the Blues prepare to return to action when the Premier League restarts later this month.
Kante has opted to socially distance himself from the rest of the Chelsea squad.
Chelsea goalie Willy Caballero revealed that Kante felt he had Covid-19 “symptoms” during the UK’s lockdown.
In addition, Kante has other concerns after his elder brother, Niamh, died of a heart attack shortly before the 2018 World Cup and he lost his father when he was 11 years old.
On Thursday, reporter Gary Jacob has posted an update on Kante’s situation in the Times.
While the French midfielder isn’t working with his colleagues, he is still arriving at Cobham every day to work by himself at the facilities.
Now, there’s a glimmer of hope that Kante may decide to change his thoughts on involving himself in group sessions. The Times reveal:
N’Golo Kante will review whether he will re-join his team-mates at Chelsea at the end of the week.
Kante has indicated that he would continue to work on an individual programme this week before re-assessing the situation, giving Chelsea hope that he could be available.
Even if Kante does change his mind, will he want to play Premier League football again?
There remain so many unknowns around Kante’s concerns with returning to work.
The Times offer no insight into whether Kante is willing to play Premier League football anytime soon.
Considering how Kante has so far kept away from training at Chelsea, it feels reasonable to assume that the player may still need more time to reach that decision.
Of course, on Wednesday it was confirmed that one person at Tottenham produced a positive Covid-19 result in the latest round of testing.
Also, one has to wonder how long Chelsea will be happy to back Kante’s absence. That’s obviously a question nobody wants to think about right now.
While finances are clearly secondary to health issues, Kante is the club’s highest earner, and a prolonged absence from the team isn’t going to be helpful to Frank Lampard.
Frank Lampard’s problem vs Aston Villa
Football fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the 2019-20 Premier League fixture list for the remainder of the campaign.
Presuming the league continues with the schedule prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, Chelsea are scheduled to play Aston Villa in the first weekend back.
Considering Kante’s circumstances, even if the midfielder does return to group training next week, will he be fit for a game on June 20?
Frank Lampard could be forced to thrust Kante back into action after only two weeks group training, as Jorginho is suspended for the Aston Villa game.
If Lampard is unable to pick Jorginho and Kante, Chelsea’s central midfield positions could be filled by Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and/or Ross Barkley.
Some Chelsea fans have been relaxed about the fact Kante could miss out following the emergence of Billy Gilmour in the games preceding the halt to Premier League football.
Perhaps Kante’s absence will signal more football for the young Scot.
