AFC Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong has admitted that he hopes to one day play with FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.
The Dutch international has been linked with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
The Eredivisie club have ruled out selling the player in January meaning any move would have to wait 12 months.
De Jong: “I would like to play with Messi one day”
The 21-year-old has dropped a big hint over his desire for his next club.
Much speculation has surrounded de Jong’s future with multiple top European clubs linked.
Barcelona, Spurs and Man City have been linked with having the strongest interest in signing the player.
De Jong has made a huge impression at the Johan Cruijff ArenA since making his debut for the club back in 2015.
Speaking about his future, de Jong admitted that he would like to play in the same team as Messi.
De Jong admitted:
“If you end up at a superior club, you will play with world class players all over the pitch.
“But for me, honestly, I would like to play with Messi one day.”
Marc Overmars: “No player will leave”
Ajax’s sporting Director Marc Overmars has ruled out the sale of the player in January.
Overmars told Spanish publication AS:
“Barcelona can return in January if they want, but no player will leave.”
Barcelona and Tottenham are both reported to have had offers rejected for de Jong.
