Frenkie de Jong claims PSG & Man City were his Barcelona alternatives

What could have been for Frenkie

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has claimed that he would have joined one of Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City, if the Blaugrana hadn’t been an option.

The Dutch midfielder has been a revelation since the start of last season.

Having broken onto the scene at Ajax, de Jong’s stock rose exponentially due to his performances both in the Eredivisie and Champions League.

The midfielder was pivotal in Ajax’s run to the semi-finals, before being knocked out by Tottenham.

That led to much interest from Barcelona, and Frenkie de Jong completed his move to the Camp Nou over the summer.

Now, he’s revealed who he’d have chosen if Barcelona weren’t interested.

‘It would have had to have been PSG or Manchester City’

Speaking before Barcelona’s clash with Getafe this weekend, de Jong claimed that he probably would have joined PSG or Manchester City, if a move to the Camp Nou hadn’t materialised.

He also suggested that his move was not about money, but he instead chose Barcelona because they showed him ‘the most love’.

‘If it had not been Barcelona, it is hard for me to say now, but it would have had to have been PSG or Manchester City,’ he explained to Catalan outlet El Periodico.

‘It is not good to talk about being motivated by money. Money is not my area – it was never a topic of discussion at meetings that I was at. That was my agent’s business.

‘My choice of Barcelona was because they were the club who showed me the most love.

‘The first time I heard about Barça? It was in 2018. My agent called me to say: ‘Barcelona has been interested in you, let’s talk to them.’ Listening to something like that makes you proud and flattered.’
