Frank Lampard urges Premier League to give Chelsea later start to next season

Frank Lampard has recently voiced his displeasure with the September 12th start date for Chelsea’s 2020/21 campaign.

Chelsea’s hectic schedule

A few months back, the 2019/20 campaign not being played to completion appeared to be a real possibility.

However, we have of course since seen both the Premier League and FA Cup seasons completed, with European competition set to get back underway this month.

But whilst having football on pretty much every day has been a joy for fans, it has proven more of a struggle for players and managers, especially those at the top of the game.

Chelsea, for example, finished their Premier League campaign on July 26th.

They then had six days to prepare for a gruelling FA Cup final meeting with Arsenal on August 1st.

And Chelsea’s season isn’t even finished there, as they are now set to face off with German giants FC Bayern Munich in the second-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on August 8th.

Lampard wants later start

The-first leg between the sides, back in February, showcased clearly that Bayern are simply on a different level to Chelsea.

As such, with a three-goal deficit to overturn, the likelihood of Chelsea advancing to the Champions League’s quarter-final stage does seem slim.

But if they somehow manage to do so, that would, of course, prolong their campaign even further.

Bear in mind, all of this is going on with Chelsea’s 2020/21 Premier League season set to start on September 12th.

And as mentioned above, one man who is none too pleased with the Londoners’ hectic schedule is Frank Lampard, with the English tactician having suggested that the Premier League should rethink his side’s restart date:

“Even in a worst-case scenario that we don’t go through against Bayern, the 12th feels too early for me for the players to start playing again.

“The players need a break. That is why we have pulled two hamstrings [César Azpilicueta and Christian Pulisic] and had players pull out of the game before this.

“I would like to think the Premier League would look seriously at that and hopefully give us a fair start next season. We deserve to be, as a Premier League club competing in the Champions League.”
