Frank Lampard provides insight into Chelsea goalkeeping situation following Mendy arrival

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard today opened up on the situation between the posts at the club, on the back of the much-anticipated arrival of Edouard Mendy.

Ongoings at Stamford Bridge have of course proven one of the talking points of European football this summer.

This comes with the Blues currently in the midst of a remarkable recruitment drive.

On the back of a pair of transfer windows without a single signing, Chelsea have since secured 7 high-profile additions.

After clinching deals for both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner before the summer window had even officially opened, the last week of August saw all of Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva follow suit.

The Londoners’ biggest outlay yet, meanwhile, came 3 weeks ago, when the long-anticipated arrival of Kai Havertz was finally made official in a deal worth a rumoured £70 million.

‘Big competition’

Despite the raft of new faces to have made the move to southwest London this summer, however, the club’s first two Premier League outings of the campaign showcased the fact that Chelsea had not yet addressed their biggest weakness.

This of course came between the posts.

As Kepa’s widely publicised struggles continued into the early weeks of the season, it quickly became evident that Frank Lampard’s men would struggle to build any sort of genuine title challenge with the Spaniard starting week in, week out.

In turn, the Blues’ transfer chiefs swooped in decisive fashion once more.

A deal for Rennes shot-stopper Edouard Mendy had long been touted, with confirmation of Chelsea’s signing of the Senegalese international having been forthcoming earlier this week.

Mendy’s arrival, in turn, is expected to see Kepa relegated to backup duties, though it is also worth noting that Willy Caballero remains on the books of the capital giants.

In fact, the veteran Argentine has this evening been trusted from the off over Kepa, for Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with West Brom:

As such, speaking earlier today, Frank Lampard was inevitably drawn on the goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge at present.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea’s official website, the English tactician was drawn on the options at his disposal following Mendy’s addition, as well as whether he has yet decided on a shot-stopper pecking order.

Lampard, though, was keen to keep his cards close to his chest regarding the subject, albeit only after admitting that Kepa’s form has posed a ‘problem’ for the Blues for some time now:

‘We know we’ve had problems in the goalkeeping area in the first two games of the season and at times last year as well. Kepa [Arrizabalaga] himself can be honest and open about that in that search for the best performance levels. Mendy comes in to of course be big competition in that area.

‘I don’t want to talk about number ones, twos and threes at the minute because he [Mendy] has just come into the club. Now it’s about how we move forward and trying to get that performance level as best as it can be. It’s very important for the make-up of the goalkeepers at the club the level is competitive and supportive.

‘In the three personalities I’ve got, we have players who want to do their best for Chelsea Football Club and we will hopefully follow that with the performances we demand at this club.’
