Frank Lampard on plans to utilise Kai Havertz in multiple positions & Christian Pulisic’s fitness

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has hinted that he intends to make full use of the versatility of Kai Havertz, by fielding the German in a number of positions over the course of the season ahead.

Blues dominating the market

The big story at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago of course surrounded gifted starlet Havertz.

Just days after all of Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr put pen-to-paper on terms with Chelsea, the Blues’ staggering recruitment drive kicked up yet another notch.

On the back of months of rampant speculation, an agreement was struck with Bayer Leverkusen, to coax Havertz, one of world football’s most highly-regarded young talents, to southwest London.

The 21-year-old has committed his future to Chelsea for the next 5 seasons, in a deal worth a rumoured £70 million:

‘Not one we have to nail down’

Much of the chatter amongst Chelsea’s fanbase in the aftermath of Havertz’s arrival being made official, meanwhile, has surrounded just where the club’s latest signing is set to play.

The 7-time capped international has spent the majority of his fledgling career lining out in an attacking midfield role, but also has experience on the right wing, and excelled as a striker over Bayer Leverkusen’s season run-in last time out.

As such, Frank Lampard could have his work cut out in finding the 21-year-old’s most effective role in his setup at Stamford Bridge.

This, though, certainly doesn’t appear to concern the Chelsea boss, with Lampard, after being drawn on Havertz earlier today, having suggested that he fully intends to make use of his big-money addition’s versatility:

‘Kai, with his qualities, is flexible to play in different positions; I haven’t changed my view in a few days of seeing him so I think we can use his versatility.’

‘One of the pluses when I spoke to Kai is that he is very comfortable. He is not that: ‘I want to play in this position, this is all I want’.’

‘He is potentially very happy to help the team, he can give us quality in different areas so it is not one that we have to nail down.’

Blues latest

During the same press conference, Lampard was also drawn on another two of his side’s stars.

Chelsea are set to get their Premier League campaign underway in a meeting with Brighton tonight, with the Londoners having been forced to sweat over the fitness of both Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta in the buildup to the clash.

Lampard, though, has confirmed that the pair returned to training last Wednesday, and are therefore ‘in contention’ to feature at the Amex:

‘I am very happy to have them both back.’

‘They both trained on Wednesday, their first day fully training with the team.’

‘They are in contention for Monday. I have to be careful. I have a squad to pick from, but the way they are training and the attitude they have come back with looks like they are over those injuries.’

‘I will just have to make sure I manage them back in in their own ways.’
