Eden Hazard debuts the Nike Mercurial Vapor Flyknit Ultra 2/2

Frank Lampard offers insight on Hazard’s change in position at Chelsea

Number ten

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has spoken about the change in Eden Hazard’s role with the club this season, and stated that he could well become the club’s number ten – instead of playing on the wing.

Having played on the wing for Chelsea for the majority of his time there, Hazard has made it clear he thinks that to get the best out of him, he needs to be deployed behind the main forward – and be freed of the defensive pressures he’s been under as well – something that caused friction between himself and Jose Mourinho.

Lampard said on BT Sport: “He’s not shy in saying how he wants to be No 10.

“He wants to be behind Morata which I found interesting.

“When Hazard came to the club I think his talent was very evident straight away.

“For the first couple of years he played off the left.

“I think what he’s getting at there is that maybe he was constrained slightly on the left, he could be easily marked.

“Whereas in this free role where we see him, particularly on Wednesday night, he was popping up all over the pitch.

“He can do a lot of damage there and we saw the ability.

“He’s been injured early season but his sharpness and freshness on Wednesday showed he’s back to where he wants to be.”

Ballon d’Or

Hazard wants to be considered the best in the world, and to be that he has to be on a level with people like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – which even he himself would admit is not the case currently.

Then, the likes of Neymar and Dybala, not to mention even younger stars like Kylian Mbappe and Asensio make it even harder for him, and Hazard will know that he needs to lead Chelsea to more titles in terms of their domestic efforts and also in the Champions League if he wants to win a Ballon d’Or in the future.
