Frank Lampard set to be sacked by Chelsea with Thomas Tuchel the favourite to replace him

Lampard to be sacked

Frank Lampard is to be sacked as Chelsea manager after just over a season in charge of the West London club. Despite his win in the FA Cup against Luton yesterday players were reportedly told not to report to the club’s training ground until the afternoon.

The Telegraph claims that this is because Frank Lampard is set to meet with club representatives for his job to be terminated. Chelsea currently sit 9th in the Premier League table after a horrific run of form, winning just 2 of their last 8 Premier League games.

The club spent a significant amount of money in the summer after recruiting Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, Thiago Silva from PSG, Edouard Mendy from Rennes, Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, Malang Sarr from Nice and Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.

The favourite to replace Lampard is reportedly former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel.

Lampard insisted he could handle pressure

The decision for Lampard to be sacked from Chelsea may come as a surprise to the former England international. Speaking after the 2-0 loss to Leicester, Lampard said that he could handle the pressure of the job despite mounting expectation that his job may soon come to an end.

“I can’t get caught up in what the reaction will be because I’d be sitting here all day concerned about it,” said Lampard. “I’m not the only manager to be put under this pressure but the good thing for me is I’m good at handling pressure.”

Although, there were some hints that he was growing frustrated with the underperformance of some of his players, especially considering the amount of money the club had spent on so many during the summer.

“There are players who are not playing as well as they should be,” he continued. “They are the only ones who can deal with that. How you handle setbacks is what defines you.”

An interesting point to consider with the new coach is how they will deal with the squad. The investment has been incredibly high on players not associated with whoever comes in. The choice will need to factor in the players who will fall under the new coach’s control.

They will need to adapt to the players within the squad and with how much has been spent on the current crop of talent, there will be little scope in regards to selling players which the new manager feels are not up to scratch. Whoever comes in will have a huge job on their hands.
