Frank Lampard is not concerned with how Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have begun their Premier League careers

Frank Lampard is not concerned with how Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have begun their Premier League careers

Slowly but surely

Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United highlighted a lack of attacking verve from both sides. However, considering the outlay Chelsea have spent in their front line players, concerns have begun to grow.

The combination of Chelsea’s stars has been somewhat of a puzzle for Frank Lampard to solve. Timo Werner’s initial lack of goals was in part due to the Englishman’s decision to field the German forward on the left. Tammy Abraham occupying the central striking role.

Disastrously Chelsea went 3-0 down to West Brom with gaps on the left flank clear to view. Werner has been able to score when played centrally and that led to him keeping the number 9 role at Old Trafford. However, eventually both Werner and Havertz were replaced by Abraham and Mason Mount after ineffective displays in Manchester.

Once Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech are fully fit, a front line of them and the German duo is something Chelsea fans are desperate to see and will hopefully get the best from the quartet.

“Very happy”

Speaking after the draw at Old Trafford, Lampard defended the German pair, noting that it takes time for players to form the connection needed for specific patterns of play to materialise.

“I am very happy with Timo. “If you go back to the game before that, he scored two goals and Kai Havertz scores a goal. I am least worried about the front end of the pitch with the players that we have there.”

“It is normal that it will take some time for relationships [to build]. For when we have got to put the ball in behind, the ball into feet, clearly these things are going to take time to build. The reason we brought Timo and Kai into the club is to add to the quality we already have here.”

Lampard is also confident Ziyech will be able to start games alongside his other summer signings.

“Hakim Ziyech is looking like he is getting close to starting a game with his fitness. I have no worries about that. The last bit didn’t happen for us today. It is normal, that happens in football but I am very happy with the players,” said Lampard.

Chelsea play Krasnodar away from home in what has become a vital game in the UCL group stage. A draw at home to Sevilla has put early pressure on the Blues to start picking up points.
