Former Chelsea pundit Frank Lampard has claimed that Antonio Conte has issued a reminder to the Chelsea players over who is boss.
He claimed that the Blues players may have started to question their manager after several poor results, but when Conte decided to drop Luiz, it showed all the players they need to step in line – and that they could also be dropped if they question the manager or fail to back him – something Conte demands 100%.
Lampard wrote in his column in the Evening Standard: “By dropping David Luiz for the past two games, Antonio Conte has sent out a major statement to the Chelsea squad.
“Conte is a strong manager and is certainly showing everyone who’s in charge. This is football. The manager has stamped his authority and it’s his right to do so.
“If there is conflict in the dressing room, it is not the worst thing in the world. Yet it is important that it does not spread as a negative because then it becomes a problem.
“The manager obviously thinks it’s the right thing to do in this case.
Luiz may have found his way back into the side, but it seems that in terms of the Premier League title race, the Blues may have to concede their crown to Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking heads and shoulders ahead of the rest of the league, and it seems that the title will be heading back to Manchester.
Of course, Chelsea still have the FA Cup, Carabo Cup and the Champions League to focus on, and a good run in that could well be seen as a success for the club this season.
