Frank Lampard discusses Jorginho’s lack of minutes for Chelsea since Premier League restart

Jorginho

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has, on Monday, spoken out over Jorginho’s lack of action for the Blues since the campaign restarted in June.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Chelsea return to action on Tuesday evening, in a meeting with London rivals Crystal Palace.

Frank Lampard’s men, barring a blip against West Ham, have been in top form since the season’s resumption, notching four wins across all competitions.

However, despite the Blues’ impressive results, the race for a top-four place in the Premier League is still extremely tight.

And with 5th-placed Manchester United the Premier League’s in-form side at the moment, Chelsea really can’t afford to slip up over the coming weeks.

Luckily for the capital giants, Crystal Palace have been pretty poor of late, with the Eagles having fallen to three league defeats on the bounce.

Lampard on Jorginho

Ahead of his side’s trip to Selhurst Park, Frank Lampard held his latest press conference on Monday.

During the presser, the English tactician discussed a number of topics, one of which came in the form of Jorginho’s continued absence from Chelsea’s starting eleven.

The Italian has endured a rather mixed stint in London, with his agent having claimed back in May that a pair of clubs had been in contact over the Blues star’s signature.

But, despite the exit rumours, Jorginho, for the most part, has enjoyed a fairly impressive 2019/20 under Lampard.

Since the restart, though, the deep-lying playmaker has not featured for the Londoners.

Granted, Jorginho was suspended for Chelsea’s first game back vs Aston Villa. But since then, he hasn’t made it off the bench across four outings – a stat that should bring even more cause for concern, given the fact that clubs are currently allowed to make five substitutions per game.

And now, as mentioned above, Lampard has been drawn on the Italian’s lack of minutes.

However, the Chelsea boss didn’t really provide much of an explanation for his decision to drop Jorginho to the bench on a regular basis, instead just praising the former Napoli man for his professionalism throughout this period:

“He’s been very professional about it. He wants to play as every player does. One of the hardest parts of the job is telling a player they’re not playing, particularly when they train well, and Jorginho always trains well.

“He has handled it professionally, and that’s what I would expect. It’s important players over the course of a long season, in a competitive squad like we have, are there to support other players when they’re playing and they’re out.

“We’ll see with my selection tomorrow whether he plays.”
