Frank Lampard and one star each from Man United & Juventus: Newcastle advised on kick-starting new era

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has again been backed to take up the reins at newly-minted Newcastle United this week, with advice also forthcoming on the kind of player who could help to ‘kick-start’ a new era at the club.

Bruce out

The news which the Magpies faithful had been awaiting for several weeks of course finally arrived a little over 48 hours ago.

This came in the form of the departure of long-time boss Steve Bruce.

On the back of the big-money takeover at St. James’ Park, it had long been viewed as more a case of when, rather than if Bruce would be sent packing, ahead of a potentially prosperous new era on Tyneside.

In turn, after the club’s defeat to Tottenham last weekend, the definitive decision was made that the Englishman no longer represented the right man to lead Newcastle forward.

It was therefore announced that Bruce’s two-year stint in the North East of England had officially been brought to an end on Wednesday afternoon:

‘A safe pair of hands’

News of Bruce’s exit, meanwhile, has since given rise to rampant speculation surrounding just who is set to be chosen as the man to replace the 60-year-old in the Magpies dugout.

A whole host of names have been tipped for the role over the last fortnight, with ex-Roma boss Paulo Fonseca currently viewed as the front-runner.

As outlined above, though, on Friday, an alternative tactician, with more in-depth experience of Premier League football, has instead been backed to lead Newcastle’s charge towards the upper echelons of English football.

The man in question? Frank Lampard.

Speaking on the latest episode of Coral and JOE’s All to Play For podcast, as cited by The Mirror, Joe Cole, a former teammate of Lampard’s at Chelsea, revealed his opinion that the ex-Blues coach would represent ‘a sensible bet’ at St. James’ Park:

‘Steve Bruce had to play the defensive style of football he did in order to keep Newcastle in the Premier League the last two seasons because he simply did not have the players to open up and play expansively.’

‘With him gone, they need to look for a manager who has some Premier League experience, whether that be somebody like Eddie Howe, Roberto Martinez or Frank Lampard.’

‘I know Frank is itching to get back managing and I think he would be a safe pair of hands for the role at this moment in time.’

‘He knows the Premier League inside out from his time at Chelsea and his playing career.’

‘He has had a front row seat in some of the biggest dressing rooms and managers the league has ever seen.’

‘Say they go and pull off a huge coup and bring in somebody like Icardi, he will know how that will affect the dressing room and how to manage him.’

‘I think he’d be a sensible bet for the job.’

Cole was also keen to lend a hand when it comes to potential January targets for the Magpies, naming struggling Juventus star Aaron Ramsey and Manchester United backup Jesse Lingard as ‘top quality’ potential additions:

‘Aaron Ramsey, Jesse Lingard, these are two top quality players who know the league that I would be looking at to kickstart this project.’

‘All of a sudden three years down the line you can be competing for the Champions League spots after that but the first thing on the agenda is survival.’
