Riyad Mahrez

Former PL star explains why Mahrez deserves respect for Leicester strike

Different approach

One former Premier League star has explained why Riyad Mahrez actually deserves respect for taking a stand against Leicester City.

The Algerian has effectively gone on strike after a failed deadline day move to Manchester City.

Leicester stood tall and rejected advances from the Premier League leaders totalling around £65million.

That lead to the player failing to show up for training on both Thursday and Friday, with the saga set to continue.

Now, former Premier League star Robbie Savage has taken a different approach by claiming that Mahrez deserves praise for his stance.

‘Riyad Mahrez will be in turmoil after being denied his dream move to Manchester City – and I don’t blame him,’ he explained in a Mirror column.

‘He’s seen other star players being allowed to fly the nest for good money – so why are Leicester demanding a king’s ransom for Mahrez?

‘A move to City would almost guarantee him winning more trophies, possibly including the Champions League, and a chance to play for Pep Guardiola, arguably the best coach on the planet.

‘After everything he has done for Leicester – a £460,000 snip who is now worth more than 100 times as much – surely there comes a point where it is churlish to stand in the way of his ambition.

‘There is talk of him being fined for failing to show up for training, but I know – from personal experience – how galling it can be when your heart lies elsewhere in football.

‘Even now, when Leicester look at the bigger picture, surely they will have to concede that Riyad Mahrez has been an unbelievably good player for them… but it’s time to let him fulfil his potential.’

Mahrez told his attitude towards Leicester City won’t help his career

That certainly isn’t the opinion that everyone is taking though.

One pundit has claimed that Mahrez’s attitude is just not going to help him in the long run.
