Former Man United star: Solskjær will not attract top players to Old Trafford

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has this morning revealed his opinion that Ole Gunnar Solskjær is not the right option to lead the Red Devils forward in the long-term.

Solskjær’s immediate impact

United legend Solskjær was handed the reigns at Old Trafford on a temporary basis two weeks ago, following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

And the Norwegian tactician has since gone on to enjoy a superb start to life at the helm in Manchester.

To this point, Solskjær has picked up 4 wins from 4, over Cardiff City, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle respectively.

In addition, the Red Devils have rediscovered much of the attacking intent that had so long been missing under Mourinho, with United having notched 14 goals across the 4 fixtures since Solskjær’s appointment.

‘Need that little bit more’

As such, despite the former hitman having not been tested against any of the Premier League’s top clubs as of yet, questions have already begun to circulate regarding whether Solskjær could see his caretaker role at Old Trafford made permanent come the end of the season.

One individual who does not feel that such a decision would be a wise move on the part of the club’s board, however, is former United defender Paul Parker.

Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT earlier today, Parker, who made over 100 Premier League appearances for the Manchester giants between 1991 and 1996, revealed his opinion that Solskjær’s lack of experience at the top level of management would prove a major hindrance to the Red Devils on the transfer market in the long-term:

‘Ole’s a lovely fella.’

‘He’s come in, he’s brought a smile into the place, everyone’s feeling happy. You’ll get the best out of anybody when they’re happy and they’re doing their work.’

‘Long-term, I don’t think so. As good as it can be this season I think you have to look at the long-term.’

‘Look at Manchester United. They need that little bit more, someone who’s really going to go out and attract the right players.’

‘Can Ole Gunnar get the right top players to come to Manchester United?’

‘I have to say with his lack of experience, players are not going to come there.’

‘Agents are not really going to come there. You’ll get players who want to play for United, no doubt now.’

‘But you’re not going to get the players that Manchester United should be getting because they haven’t got a manager of the calibre that players and agent are going to want their man to come to.’

‘Managed top quality players’

Parker also provided his take on who he feels would be the right manager to lead United forward into a new era:

‘One of the names that has been mentioned is Laurent Blanc.’

‘Someone said to me he’s been a national team manager, he managed PSG, oh but that’s easy because they win everything.’

‘It wasn’t so much about it was easy for him but he managed top quality players.’

‘He managed [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic never had a go at him, Ibrahimovic says good things about him.’

‘So he managed top quality players and he can attract good top players now because they see and hear the name and they go ‘I want to be around him’.’
