One former Mainz coach has explained his surprise that Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius signed for a big club due to issues in Germany.
The German goalkeeper is starting to show some of his promise at Anfield having come in with some decent expectations.
The player signed for just under £5m but it was his potential that had people thinking.
Though, one of his former coaches is just surprised he managed to sign for a big club with some issues he had with his footing at Mainz.
While he has obviously improved, at the time, Kasper Hjulmand certainly did not expect to join a big club like Liverpool.
“In Mainz, it was not written in the sun, moon and stars for me that he would end up in a big club like Liverpool,” Kasper Hjulmand explained.
“He has a wonderful mental strength, and he has not been influenced by the kinds he has received.
“At that time, I thought his game with his feet was a bit too bad and that he was a little too much on flat feet, but I can see that he has developed it really fine without ever increasing his strength. “
“His great strength is that he does not influence the environment. He loves to be on the path there, he loves the games and he loves when it grows up.
“It’s his biggest plus. And then he is also a good guy.”

While he’s clearly improved, he will need to be at his best tonight.
That is because Liverpool face off against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League.
The sides will go toe to toe at Anfield in the first leg as both sides look to get the edge in the tie.
Though, one Liverpool star seemingly has a plan to stop City.
