Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has been very critical of the Reds’ midfield and in particular, Thiago, after the 2022 Champions League final.

Liverpool faced off with Real Madrid in the Champions League final this past weekend and would lose the tie 1-0.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were outplayed for much of the game and, like they had done in their previous two finals this season, failed to score a goal.

Now, after the game, writing for Sky Germany, Didi Hamann has hit out at Liverpool’s ‘old fashioned’ midfield.

Hamann stated that Naby Keita is a disappointment, and that Jordan Henderson is a worker. On Thiago, meanwhile, the former player claimed that the Spaniard is one of the most overrated players in European football:

“In my opinion, the Reds need to modernize the team a bit, especially in midfield,” Hamann said. “I don't understand the hype about Thiago. For me he is one of the most overrated players in European football.

“When things are going well and you have a lot of possession he's a good player, but when push comes to shove you don't see him. If you need someone who sets accents, then he doesn't do it.

“Keita is also a disappointment, Henderson is a worker. They need a player who can make the difference and give the team that extra something.”

Given how poor Liverpool were, especially in midfield, vs Madrid, it is easy to see why some of their players have come in for criticism.

However, it is worth remembering that in Luka Modric, Toni Kross and Casemiro, Real have one of the most experienced, talented midfields in Europe.
